Titanic Survivor Sells

The last remaining survivor of the Titanic plans to sell items from the ship to pay her nursing home fees. Millvina Dean was nine weeks old when the huge ship sank in the North Atlantic in 1912. Now aged 96 she plans to raise £3,000 by selling items in an auction such as a suitcase packed with clothes given to her as a gift by people in New York after her rescue back in 1912.

Discovery of Net Address Flaw

Mr Dan Kaminsky exposed a way for malicious hackers to hijack DNS and re-direct people to fake pages even if they typed in the correct address for a website. The founder of the flaw said, speaking for the first time in a conference in Las Vegas, “Every network is at risk. That’s what this flaw has shown.”

At the conference, Mr Kaminsky discussed 15 other ways for the flaw to be exploited, making it easier for those with the knowledge to take advantage of it.

Educational seems to be fundamental in making the net a safer place.

Space Tourist Jet Unveiled

British tycoon Sir Richard Branson has unveiled an aircraft that will be used to transport customers into space. The US is currently home to the high-altitude jet that will act as a mothership to a spacecraft. Around 250 people have already paid $200,000 each to be one of the first to travel into space thanks to Branson’s new service.

The maiden voyage is due to take place in approximately 18 months time. Branson has a long term dream of people taking holidays into space.

Genes the key to Memory

Despite it not being popular or politically correct to say so, men and woman are not equal. Continually research shows that there are very real differences in the sexes and how we process information, make decisions and now how we commit information to memory.

Men have a better capacity for facts and figures yet struggle to recall birthday and anniversary dates. Researchers from Kings College in London believe that it’s all got to do with men and woman using different genes when creating memories. The findings could have significant implications for research into Alzheimer’s.

Music rights to be freed up by the EU

Stores offering music downloads such as apple’s i-tunes could soon be able to operate one shop dedicated to the whole of Europe. Current different regulations apply and this is not possible and must be negotiated differently for different societies.

New ruling will also allow different societies to license music in more than one country.

The idea of the new proposals for the societies to compete against each other and end clauses in their cross-border contracts.

Differing cancer survival rates

Across the globe, there are huge gaps in cancer survival rates. The countries with the higher rates include Australia, Japan, France, US and Canada. Mainly, this is down to funds put towards to research by each governing body.

Researchers have said higher spending has led to quick access to tests and faster treatment. This generally resulting in a steady increase of cancer survival rates in recent years.

Highlighting the large gap in rates, Algeria, the only African country to be involved in the survey, came bottom in all types of cancer.
